This Week
In Grade 6 Band
We are in the final preparation for the Optimist Festival.    Students have been asked to play their Optimist pieces for us.   This is so that we can help find the trouble spots and help students identify the spots they should be practicing.   Students should have trouble spots identified and those are the sections that need practicing.

Grade 6's this week had a "mock" festival experience.   We pretended that it was festival day and did as we would the day of festival.    We will practice this again next week with fewer prompts.

In Grade 7 Band
Grade 7's have been asked to make sure they know their festival music well enough to play alone.  We will be checking students on their music.    Grade 7's worked very hard at tempo changes.   They did an extremely nice job of watching and carrying out some extremely challenging tempo changes.   In order to do this, students must know their music well enough to look up lots!   We had a "mock" festival experience this week and will have another "mock" festival next week.

In Grade 8 Band
We are also getting ready for our performance.  Pieces should be close to memorized.  Our dress rehearsal will be on Wednesday, March 9th at 9:30-10:30.  Please continue to listen to the recordings and practice your parts.

This Week in Grade 6 Band
(Massey, Grant Road, McVeety, RCS, and Perry)
The Grade 6's have been working hard learning new scales, and new notes.  This week Grade 6's tried their concert Bb scale in half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenth notes.   We experimented with different tempos using these kind of notes.   We also experimented with 3/4 time and 2/4 time.  We also have begun demonstrating accents, staccatos,  and tenutos.   Grade 6's are beginning to identify and demonstrate these articulations in their music.   We are continuing to work on Concert Eb scale.

Students were asked to practice the melody section of Courtly Dance and Procession.    Grant Road and Perry students were asked to practice the beginning of Chorale and Recessional to measure 19.   Students who have these mastered were asked to practice in their blue book on page 19.

This Week in Grade 7 Band
(Massey, Grant Road, McVeety, RCS, and Perry)
The Grade 7's have been working very hard at including details in our Optimist pieces.   Details include where to breathe, and our dynamic choices.  When all of us did these changes together there were some very nice sounding moments.   We are a little bit stuck in the middle section of At Twilight, and so students were asked to practice measures 34 - 48 of that piece.    We will work on that section more next week.   Students are encouraged to go to the FJH website and listen to the recording.      Nice work this week Grade 7's!

This Week in Grade 8 Band
(Masey, Grant Road, McVeety, RCS, and Perry)

Excellent progress has been made on Spania.  We're starting to add the stylistic elements that will really bring this piece to life.  Now we are going to work on memorizing our parts so that we can concentrate on playing together and watching the conductor.  This next week we will work on the ends of both pieces and also restart Rippling Watercolors.

This Week in Grade 6 Band
(Massey, Grant Road, McVeety, RCS, and Perry)
This week the Grade 6's learned about Concert Eb scale.   One of their pieces is written in Eb and so we have practiced Concert Eb.   We identified the piece that was in Concert Eb and the piece that was in Concert Bb.   Some of the Grade 6's experimented a little with not only eighth notes, but sixteenth notes as well.   Grant Road and Perry Grade 6's learned about dotted notes.   We saw that dotted half notes get three beats, and dotted quarter notes get one and a half beats.

Grade 6's were asked to practice Courtly Dance and Procession.  Grade 6's were told we would be figuring out which parts were harmony and which parts were melody.   As well Massey, RCS, and McVeety students were asked to practice their melody sections in Ayre and Dance.    Grant Road and Perry students were asked to practice 19 to the end of Chorale and Recessional.

This Week in Grade 7 Band
(Massey, Grant Road, McVeety, RCS, and Perry)
The Grade 7's had great rehearsals this week.  This week we worked on learning our concert F scale.   This is so that when we play Pandora we will be used to that key signature.   We also have been working extremely hard on our phrasing and on our dynamics in At Twilight and Incantation and Ritual.   We worked on figuring out what was melody and what was harmony.   Grade 7's were asked to pracitce 34-54 in INcantation and Ritual and 32-end of At Twilight.

This Week in Grade 8 Band
(Masey, Grant Road, McVeety, RCS, and Perry)

We had another productive week in Gr.8 band.  We've begun working on a couple of new tunes, When Summer Takes Flight and Night Flight of the Gargoyles.  They are tough but fun pieces.  We are also working very hard on our Optimist pieces.  We've got the notes and rhythms figured out but are still needing work on our dynamics and phrasing.  Soon we will begin playing parts of these pieces for memory.
